West Ham 1912 Commercial Directory

This is quite a large listing of commercial activities by 1912. I also find this time quite pertinent because it is two years before the wholesale slaughter of millions in the First World war. It was a long time ago, so I have no argument with the nations involved, time moves on.
The poems of Wilfrid Owen, a war correspondent whom died a few days before the end of the war are indicative of the horrors of this period of time. My favourite poem of all time is 'Dulce Decorum est Pro Patria Mori'. This roughly translates from Latin into 'It is a great and wonderful thing to die for ones country' - the poem describes a soldier drowning in chlorine gas.
Anyway, here is West Ham in 1912, listed alphabetically, I am sure large numbers of these listed perished in the Great war of 1914- 1918. Stratford was a major Territorial centre and Recruiting area for the Armed Forces.
Genocide [i.e. mass muder] continues still,; in Yugoslavia in the 1990's, remember Rwanda a few years ago; and today in the Darfur region of Sudan. In the 'British Isles' we replace this with a reasonable alternative, fox hunting. This involves a pack of hounds, and a bunch of 'Upper & Middle class scallywags' on horseback, chasing a fox to its death, before the scared fox is ripped to pieces by this pack of hounds. This is a humane way of keeping pestilence at bay, and better than shooting them, so I am led to believe!
